My Tradie Business Isn’t Getting Calls From Google. What Should I Fix First?
On this page
If your tradie business is not getting calls from Google, check four things in order: whether you appear for the right services and suburbs, whether your Google Business Profile is accurate, whether your website gives visitors a clear reason to call, and whether your leads are being tracked properly.
Do not start by publishing more blog posts or creating dozens of suburb pages. First, find out whether the problem is visibility, search targeting, website conversion or lead tracking.
What should a tradie fix first if Google is not bringing calls?

Most businesses that are not receiving enquiries from Google have a problem at one of four stages:
- Google is not showing the business for relevant searches.
- The business profile does not provide enough accurate information.
- The website receives visitors but does not convert them.
- Calls and enquiries are not being recorded correctly.
Work through these stages in order. Fixing the wrong stage can waste time and money.
1. Check whether Google shows your business for the right searches
Ranking for your business name does not mean you are visible for searches that generate new work.
A plumber may appear when someone searches for the business directly but remain difficult to find for searches such as “emergency plumber in Melbourne” or “blocked drain plumber near me”.
An electrician may receive impressions for “electrician” but not appear for valuable services such as switchboard upgrades, rewiring or EV charger installation.
Check your visibility for three types of searches:
- Your main services
- Your priority suburbs
- Service and suburb combinations
Google says local results are mainly influenced by relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance refers to how closely the business matches the search. Distance considers how close the business is to the searcher. Prominence relates to how well-known or established the business appears to be. Google explains these local ranking factors here.
Your checks should include Google Search, Google Maps and your Google Business Profile performance data. Record whether you appear, which competitors appear above you, and whether the result leads to a useful service page.
Do not judge your SEO only by searching from your own home or office. Local results can change depending on the searcher’s location, device and search wording.
What to check in Google Search Console
Search Console can show whether people are seeing or clicking your website for relevant searches.
Look for:
- Impressions for service searches
- Clicks from non-branded searches
- Searches that include suburbs
- Pages receiving impressions but few clicks
- Services that are not receiving any visibility
If your website receives impressions but very few clicks, review the page title and description. If it receives clicks but no enquiries, the problem may be on the website rather than in the rankings.
2. Fix your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is one of the first places potential customers may see your business.
Make sure the profile includes:
- The correct real-world business name
- The most relevant primary category
- Accurate business hours
- A working local phone number
- The correct website
- Relevant services
- Accurate service areas
- Recent project photos
- Genuine customer reviews
- Responses to customer reviews
Google states that complete and accurate business information makes a profile more likely to appear in relevant local results. Businesses should also use their real-world name and provide accurate location information.
Read Google’s Business Profile guidelines.
Service-area businesses need accurate location settings
Many tradies travel to customers instead of operating from a public shopfront.
If you run a service-area business, configure the profile to reflect the areas you genuinely serve. Do not create fake office locations in every suburb. Do not use a virtual office simply to appear closer to customers.
Google’s guidelines allow service-area businesses to define the areas they serve and, where appropriate, hide a residential address from public view. A business should generally have one profile representing the actual business location or service area.
Add evidence that supports the service
Photos should show real work completed by the business.
Useful examples include:
- Completed installations
- Before-and-after repairs
- Branded vehicles
- Team members at work
- Equipment and materials
- Commercial or residential projects
Generic stock photos do not prove that your business performs the service.
Reviews should also mention the work completed where the customer is comfortable providing those details. A review that says “great service” provides less context than one that explains the business repaired a burst pipe, replaced a switchboard or completed a same-day job.
3. Make sure important services have useful pages
A single page listing every service may not be enough to attract customers searching for a specific problem.
Create a dedicated page when the service:
- Generates valuable enquiries
- Has a distinct customer need
- Requires different information
- Has its own suburbs or service areas
- Deserves separate examples, reviews or project evidence
A plumbing website may need separate pages for blocked drains, hot water repairs, gas fitting and emergency plumbing.
An electrical website may need separate pages for switchboard upgrades, fault finding, rewiring, lighting and EV charger installation.
Each service page should explain:
- What the service includes
- Common signs that a customer needs it
- Where the service is available
- What the process involves
- Why customers should trust the business
- How to request a quote or urgent booking
The page should answer the customer’s main question before asking them to make contact. This makes the content more useful and reduces the amount of information a potential customer needs to find elsewhere.
For a broader strategy, see our guide to SEO for tradies.
Do not create hundreds of near-identical suburb pages
A suburb page should contain useful local information, not just a different suburb name.
A stronger local page might explain:
- The suburbs actually covered
- Typical property types in the area
- Common local service requests
- Travel or emergency availability
- Relevant completed projects
- Local customer feedback
Copied pages with only the suburb name changed can create a poor experience for users and add little value. Google recommends creating helpful, reliable content for people rather than producing pages mainly to manipulate search results. Google’s helpful content guidance supports this approach.

4. Improve the website before buying more traffic
SEO can bring the right visitor to your website. The website still needs to make contacting the business easy.
Check the mobile version first. Many customers searching for an urgent trade service will use their phone.
The phone number should be easy to find and tap. The main call to action should be clear, such as “Call now”, “Request a quote” or “Book an electrician”.
The page should also make the following information easy to find:
- Services provided
- Areas covered
- Opening and emergency hours
- Customer reviews
- Relevant licences or qualifications
- Insurance information where appropriate
- Recent project examples
- Expected response times
A visitor should not need to search through several pages to determine whether the business serves their suburb or handles their problem.
If the business receives website visitors but no calls, review the page’s offer, trust signals, contact process and mobile usability before assuming that more traffic is the answer.
5. Check whether leads are being measured
Some businesses are receiving enquiries but do not know where those enquiries came from.
Track:
- Phone calls
- Quote form submissions
- Emails
- Direction requests
- New customer enquiries
- Booked jobs
- Lead source
- Service requested
- Revenue generated
A ranking report cannot show whether SEO is producing profitable work.
Ask every new lead how they found the business. Compare this information with website analytics, Search Console and call tracking data where available.
The goal is not simply to rank for more keywords. The goal is to generate qualified enquiries that can become booked jobs.
What should a small tradie business prioritise?
Use this order:
- Repair broken phone numbers, forms and tracking.
- Correct the Google Business Profile.
- Improve the highest-value service pages.
- Clarify the priority suburbs and service areas.
- Add genuine reviews, photos and project evidence.
- Improve mobile usability and technical performance.
- Publish supporting content and build relevant authority.
This order prevents a business from spending time attracting more visitors to a website that is not ready to convert them.
Common fixes that can create more problems
Avoid adding keywords to the Google Business Profile name unless they are part of the real business name.
Avoid creating fake locations, buying reviews or publishing copied suburb pages.
Avoid judging success only by rankings. A position increase is useful only if it produces relevant traffic, calls or enquiries.
Avoid publishing generic articles that do not demonstrate practical trade knowledge. Content should answer a real customer question, provide useful detail and explain what the reader should do next.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my tradie business not showing on Google?
The business may not be targeting the right services, may have an incomplete Google Business Profile, or may be competing against businesses with stronger local relevance and prominence. Check the profile, service pages, service areas and customer reviews first.
Why do I rank on Google but receive no calls?
The search may not have strong buying intent, or the website may not make it easy to call or request a quote. Review the page’s service information, trust signals, mobile layout and contact process.
Should I create a page for every suburb?
Only create a suburb page when it can provide genuinely useful local information. A smaller group of detailed pages is usually more valuable than a large set of near-identical pages.
Is Google Ads better than SEO for getting calls?
Google Ads can provide faster visibility, while SEO can build longer-term organic visibility. The right choice depends on urgency, budget, competition and whether the website and Google Business Profile are ready to convert visitors.
How long does local SEO take for a tradie?
The timeframe depends on competition, location, website quality, profile strength and the current authority of the business. Melbourne and Sydney searches can be highly competitive, so the work should be prioritised around profitable services and realistic service areas.
